Reformation Sunday is an annual observance of the Protestant Reformation, marking when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the door of the All Saints Church in Wittenburg, Germany, on All Hallow’s Eve, October 31, 1517.

We begin and prepare for worship by centering ourselves, remembering the waters of baptism.

In baptism, we are joined to Christ and made members of one body, a people seeking to live faithfully into God’s purpose for us and for all creation.

Forgive our accommodations to being less than faithful and coming up short on justice. Lead us forward on the path of faith, as loyal and grateful followers of Jesus Christ. Amen.

God of Wanderers, remind us of the beauty of footsteps. Forwards and backwards, we move through this world—sometimes alongside one another, just as often in front or behind. What might be one step for one person might be ten for another. Let us be thankful for every step. Let us remember to be patient with each other’s steps. For progress is wonderfully and eccentrically designed and a convoluted journey is no less respectable than the straightforward path.

Let us meet each other where we’re at and encourage one another to keep going. In this, we strive always to more faithfully follow the way of Christ, your Beloved, Anointed One. Amen.

God of Others, we are amazed by the vast diversity of your Creation—of people with perspectives both like and unlike our own. We admit that it is tempting to exalt our own identities—to assume knowledge is a glass house, a stable palace void of ambiguity and open doors.

Strengthen us, O God, so that we may appreciate difference, welcoming the Stranger, the Other, and recognizing in turn our own Strange Otherness. In the vast glory of your Creation, we are but a portion of a whole greater than the sum of its parts. As we seek to follow the way of Christ, your Beloved, Anointed One, let us embrace those parts. Let us embrace one another.
