The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We begin and prepare for worship by centering ourselves, remembering the waters of baptism.

In baptism, we are joined to Christ and made members of one body— a people seeking to live faithfully into God’s purpose for us and for all creation.

PRELUDE

*CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 27:4-5

One thing I ask from the Holy One, this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Holy One
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Holy One
and to seek God in God’s temple.
For in the day of trouble
God will keep me safe in God’s dwelling;
God will hide me in the shelter of God’s sacred tent
and set me high upon a rock.

*HYMN 32 I Sing the Mighty Power of God  ELLACOMBE

*INVITATION TO CONFESSION

Friends, God knows our strengths and our weaknesses,
and calls us to lay our burdens down.
Trusting in God’s grace to free us and make us whole,
let us make our confession before God.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION+

Ever-faithful God,
whose being is perfect righteousness:
through Christ, reconcile us with the helpless and lonely,
with those we ignore or oppress,
and with those we have called enemies,
that we may serve all people as your hands of love,
and sit at the feet of those
who need our compassionate care. Amen.

Silent confession.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

HYMN 361 O Christ, the Great Foundation, vs 3

Where tyrants’ hold is tightened, when strong devour the weak,
Where innocents are frightened, the righteous fear to speak,
there let your church awaking attach the powers of sin
and, all their ramparts breaking, with you the vict’ry win.

*ASSURANCE OF GRACE

We do not need to let our hearts be troubled,
nor do we need to let them be afraid.
For in this moment and always,
God extends grace and peace beyond our understanding
to all people through Christ.

Believe the Good News of the Gospel.
In Jesus Christ we are loved and befriended by God.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE

And since we have been reconciled to God, let us also be reconciled to one another.

The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.

The congregation is invited to exchange signs of peace.

Our Father-Mother, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive the sins of others; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Our book study will resume on July 27th with Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower. The book study will meet at 9:45 in the assembly room before Sunday worship. For more information, please contact Jude Romines (jude@woodlandnash.org).
